Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2025 Thank You

Yesterday we hosted our annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on the Gardens’ campus with the usual march from the CalTrain Station ending up on our Great Lawn. This year we had close to 5,000 participate, as a result of the fine weather we had– sunny and warm.
The atmosphere was also sunny and warm with speeches, music, and a series of related activities that have become the trademark of this celebratory day. USA Today rates the Black Comic Book Festival as one of the top comic book festivals in the country, and this year did not disappoint. We were also treated with a fiery speech by Amos Brown Jr., the last of the fifteen original students of Dr. King, going strong at 84.
Our new Mayor Daniel Lurie spoke, along with other dignitaries including members of the Board of Supervisors, State Officials and local leaders offering company. Dr. King has a noted history with San Francisco and the feelings are deep and endearing.
Prior to the festivities, the Conservancy held a volunteer event as a “Day of Service” with 10 volunteers who came to help us plant new perennials and remove invasive Poa annua grass. Thank you, Staff, and our landscape partners at Gardeners Guild. The site that includes arguably the most prolific memorial to Dr. King in the nation, showed well today– thanks to the staff who work hard each day in not just maintaining, but making the place shine.
